Periscope was a famous streaming video platform which enabled people to view and share live videos from all over the world. What made Periscope so popular was its ability to instantly stream live broadcasts of events. The simplicity and ease of use were some of the main features that made Periscope standout in the market. One could start broadcasting their moments and experiences within no time, right from their mobile phones. During live broadcasts, viewers could comment and like, leading to an atmosphere of community.
Another feature that Periscope had is “Replay”, where one could see their missed videos even after they had been aired on streaming platform. This helped extend the duration for which a stream lived beyond a single airing, thus reaching more individuals while maximizing the impact of any piece broadcast online.
Besides broadcasting live, Periscope also seamlessly merged with Twitter, enabling users post streams directly on various social media sites and to followers in Twitter. As such, it got introduced into the public domain through Twitter, thereby increasing its popularity as well as reaching many people who would see the broadcasts or follow shared links through this social media platform.
Periscope served different purposes like citizen journalism; personal broadcasting; covering real-time events, among others. This allowed for those memorable occasions when news broke or someone’s life was opened up for many more people than usual, suggesting both private lifestyles and individual matters being exposed on a mass scale thanks to this particular application.
However, in December 2020, Twitter announced its decision to close down Periscope due to low usage by users compared to other similar platforms for live streaming. Currently, by March 2021, Periscope will have ceased its operations, with its website and mobile apps taken down.
Even though one can no longer access or use Periscope’s facilities today, the technology developed around it has transformed into other services with their own platforms that allow real-time actions to be viewed worldwide thanks to internet connectivity available now
