Microsoft operated a live streaming platform that was called Beam, formerly Mixer. Beam, which was launched in 2016, aimed at providing an alternative live streaming experience by having certain features like low-latency streaming, interactive controls, and community engagement tools. One of its outstanding characteristics was the low-latency streaming technology that helped reduce the time delay between the broadcaster and viewers. This led to immediate interaction between creators and audience during live broadcasts, hence creating a stronger bond between them.
Beam also brought into play some interactive abilities to improve both the streamers’ and audiences’ experiences. For example, MixPlay allowed streamers to include elements such as polls, quizzes or games, enabling immediate involvement from those who were watching. Moreover, by viewing streams and taking part in chat sessions, sparks (virtual currency) would be awarded to them; Sparks could then be used for virtual gifts or donations supporting their admired content creators.
Beam had the priority of being inclusive as well as fostering community, thus constructing an optimistic environment and inviting users. It supported creators from different backgrounds by giving them access to tools that aided them in growing their channels and communicating with their fans. Through channel analytics, promotional tools, and community management features, among others, creators were able to establish their fan base on Beam.
After coming up with innovative characteristics as well as having a strong community it said goodbye in June 2020 merging with Facebook Gaming since this move enabled it compete effectively in the increasingly saturated live-streaming market and concentrate on other areas of the gaming industry.
However, even if Beam is not functional now, its ideas for live-streaming will always be remembered. The platform has played a significant role in shaping the future of live streaming, with developments affecting everything else within this field
